part of the Accessible BC Act our school district has made available a form at the bottom of this page for members of the public that interact with us to provide feedback about accessibility in our organization.<\/p>\n<p>The Accessible British Columbia Act aims to support the identification, prevention, and removal of barriers that people with disabilities face in their day-to-day lives. \u200b<\/p>\n<h2>Key themes of the act:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Breaking down barriers\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Advancing human rights\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Promoting fairness and equity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Themes specific to Education:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Increased visibility of those with disabilities\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Public education campaigns to include those with disabilities in the education system\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Development of targeted data-aria-level=\"1\">Focus on accessibility, empathy and sensitivity training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Important Definitions from the Act<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Disability:<\/strong> <span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">An inability to participate fully and equally in society\u00a0as a result of\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">interaction of an impairment and a barrier<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Barrier:<\/strong> <span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">Essentially, anything that hinders the full and equal participation in society of\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">a person with an impairment.<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impairment:<\/strong> <span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">A physical, sensory, mental, intellectual, or cognitive impairment which is\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-usefontface=\"false\" data-contrast=\"none\">permanent, temporary, or episodic.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n<h2>What are examples of barriers to accessibility?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Attitudinal: when people think, and act based upon false assumptions\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Physical: when obstacles in an environment make access difficult\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Information or Communication: when people with disabilities are excluded because they use other ways to communicate.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Systemic: when an organization\u2019s policies, practices and procedures result in exclusion\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Technology: when technology can\u2019t be accessed by people with disabilities\u200b.<\/li>\n<li data-charcodes=\"8226\" data-font=\"Arial,Sans-Serif\" data-buautonum=\"8\" data-margin=\"720\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Sensory: when sensory information such as lights, sounds, smells, etc. prevent participation in the We will also share feedback to relevant department or school leaders.
